A pop-up that says your computer is infected can be alarming. But a warning on a
webpage isn’t proof that your device has a virus. Some scams use urgent messages
to persuade people to call a number, install software or give a stranger remote
access to their computer.

The Federal Trade Commission warns that fake tech-support messages may imitate well-
known companies and try to scare people into sharing information or allowing remote
access. It also says real security pop-ups won’t ask you to call a phone number.

### If a warning appears

 * Don’t call a number displayed in the pop-up.
 * Don’t install software because a pop-up tells you to.
 * Don’t give an unexpected caller remote access to your device.
 * Close the browser tab or window if you can do so safely.
 * If the message keeps appearing, ask someone you trust or contact a technician
using contact details you found independently.

If you already gave someone access to your computer or shared a password, act promptly.
Use a different, trusted device to change affected passwords, and contact your bank
if you shared payment details or sent money.

### Get the device checked

Unexpected pop-ups, unfamiliar programs or unusual device behaviour can have different
causes. Don’t assume one symptom proves malware is present. A proper assessment
can help establish what’s happening and what steps may be appropriate.
